About IRCHA

The International Radio Control Helicopter Association (IRCHA) is the premier organization dedicated to the advancement and enjoyment of radio-controlled (RC) helicopters.

Founded in 1989 by Don Chapman, IRCHA serves as the Special Interest Group (SIG) for RC helicopters, officially recognized by the Academy of Model Aeronautics (AMA). With a global community of enthusiasts, IRCHA fosters education, innovation, and camaraderie through events, resources, and advocacy.

Our Mission

IRCHA is committed to promoting the RC helicopter hobby by:

  • Providing educational resources and opportunities for skill development.'
  • Representing pilots within the AMA and the broader model aviation community.
  • Offering exceptional service to members through exclusive content and support.
  • Organizing world-class events like the annual IRCHA Jamboree.
  • Organizing a well structured, all inclusive competition called the IRCHA Cup to encourage participation and grow support to the hobby.

History

Since its founding in 1989, IRCHA has been a driving force in the RC helicopter community. Established by Don Chapman to represent helicopter pilots within the AMA,

IRCHA quickly became a hub for enthusiasts seeking to connect and grow their skills. Over the decades, the organization has evolved, hosting increasingly ambitious events and embracing advancements in RC technology.

The IRCHA Jamboree, launched as the organization’s flagship event, has grown into the world’s largest gathering of RC helicopter pilots. In 2012, the Jamboree set a record with 1,049 registered pilots, surpassing previous highs of 954 in 2009 and 780 in 2008. These milestones reflect IRCHA’s ability to unite pilots globally and showcase the hobby’s potential. Despite challenges, such as reduced attendance in 2020 due to external circumstances, IRCHA has consistently delivered memorable experiences, with nearly 200 pilots and 50 spectators participating that year.

Today, IRCHA continues to inspire new generations of pilots, support local clubs, and advocate for the hobby’s growth, ensuring its legacy endures.

Annual IRCHA Jamboree

The IRCHA Jamboree is a highlight of the RC helicopter calendar, held annually at the International Aeromodelling Center in Muncie, Indiana. This week-long event brings together pilots from around the world for competitions, demonstrations, and community-building. Previous activities have included scale flying, 3D aerobatics, precision challenges, and unique contests like the Lily Pad Hop and the original "One" competition and the Battle of the Brands.

The 2025 IRCHA Jamboree, themed “Reloaded,” was set for August 3–10, 2025 and was a complete success.
